Take Montereau residents Kathy and Art Bogie, who own a Jack Russell Terrier mix, Spot Wally. In 2006, the Bogies chanced upon Spot Wally in a Walmart parking lot in Okmulgee. “The dog was wandering through the parking lot, looking for food,” Kathy said. “He was all skin and bones, no hair, big ticks. When we saw him, we just couldn’t stand it and scooped him up. We wrapped him in a beach towel and got him some food, and then we took him to a veterinarian friend.” It turns out Spot Wally had heartworms, parvo and mange, among other conditions, and likely wouldn’t have lived more than a couple of days had the Bogies not rescued him. Miraculously, however, Spot Wally survived and has been with the Bogies ever since. They gave him a double name—Spot, because one eye is totally black, but there is a little spot on the other eye; and Wally because they found him at Walmart, aka Wally World. Along the Lake Trail Today, Kathy and Art are residents of Montereau, a local retirement community, and these days you can find the Bogies walking their dog around the community’s quiet campus, particularly along the lake trail or at the neighborhood dog park. “It’s nice to have a pet these days because of the coronavirus,” Kathy said. “Montereau has done a beautiful job of creating a safe atmosphere for us, and we’re starting to re-open carefully, but I’m glad I can always take Spot Wally out for a walk.” Originally from the Texas hill country, the Bogies moved to Montereau about a year and a half ago, after deciding they wanted to enjoy the amenities of an independent living community and have access to the continuing of care health services. As a Continuing Care Retirement Community, Montereau offers independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and long-term care. “We live in a garden home, so it was an easy transition from our home in Texas,” she explained. “We’re in our seventies, so we like to barbeque and sit outside and stay active, which we can do here. We’ve been pleased with the decision.” A Place Where Everyone Thrives Montereau has certainly offered the Bogies an active lifestyle with a focus on health and wellness, allowing them to thrive. Lifestyle amenities range from world-class dining (three restaurants on campus) to the Vitality wellness program that includes fitness classes, book clubs, spa treatments and more. Overall, it’s a place where residents can stay active and enjoy the hospitality of a maintenance- free retirement community. Spot Wally, too, is still as active as ever. “He’s just the best dog,” Kathy said. “He knows we rescued him and saved his life, so he goes everywhere with us.” At Montereau, we know our furry friends are part of the family; that’s why our campus is pet friendly. We even host our very own dog park on-site called Le Bark Park. Discover the countless reasons our residents have chosen to call Montereau home.
