16 TulsaPets • September/October 2020 SAINT SIMEON’S SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY WRITTEN BY: Charlie Redding The heritage of Saint Simeon’s began in 1960. The Rev. Dr. E. H. Eckel dreamed of a home for people in the “eventide” of life. This Christian senior living community would meet physical, emotional and spiritual needs for its residents. The dream would later become his reality. Being a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and being founded on the traditions of the church, this community has evolved in so many ways. As a not-for-profit organization, accountability in the form of excellent care has been the vanguard throughout Saint Simeon’s history. Saint Simeon’s not only welcomes people of all faiths but also welcomes wildlife! Nestled on 50 secluded acres just outside downtown, the grounds of our community—also a Certified Wildlife Habitat—provide shelter, food and water to so many magnificent animals. Our most notable animals to date would have to be our beloved Simone, the resident canine, and the peacocks! The Eden Alternative environment that we have here on our campus is unlike any other. The smiles you see on a resident’s face while looking at the Koi pond, observing the bird aviaries, visiting weekly with Simone, and watching our peahens give birth to the peachicks and the peacocks strut their feathers to stake their claim, all make your heart happy. Notable to be seen on our grounds are deer, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, opossums, birds, hawks, owls, pigeons, tortoises, foxes, woodchucks, bobcats, dragonflies, frogs, Koi, goldfish and the occasional snake! For the last five years, Saint Simeon’s chaplain has also provided an annual “Blessing of the Pets.” Held every October, residents and their loved ones are invited to attend. Saint Simeon’s is also proud to give back to the community. Since 2014, the campus has supported the Tulsa Animal Welfare Shelter, collecting dog and cat food for Tulsa’s homeless community to feed their pets during the Christmas season. In 2019, pet food donations totaled 2,600 pounds! The residents and their guests have a lot to look at when it comes to pets and wildlife at Saint Simeon’s, and the tagline says it all: “Minutes from downtown, Miles from ordinary.” Seniors & Pets Nestled on 50 secluded acres just outside downtown, Saint Simeon’s has been exceeding expectations in senior care and living since 1960.
