TulsaPets Magazine September 2020

4 TulsaPets • September/October 2020 I didn’t expect a recent routine dental visit to turn into a reminder of the importance of our local rescue community. But somehow, I left with clean teeth and the beginning of a chain reaction that rescued seven felines. As soon as I arrived at Skyview Family Dental in Park Tower at 51st & Yale, my hygienist Emily—a part-time dog rescuer herself—alerted me to the situation: a mama cat and six kittens were hiding out in the bushes near the front doors. Not only was it swelteringly hot, but the slightest venture into the busy traffic would mean their demise. Mama cat hissed a warning, and feline whisperers, we are not, so Emily left the cats some food and water to get them through the night. While still at the dentist office, I emailed Marilyn King, our TulsaPets publisher, who emailed Linda Holland of StreetCats Tulsa. By the next day, Kelly Hines—who works with T-Town TNR, Sapulpa Furry Friends and Tulsa Animal Welfare—rescued all seven cats. It took a long three hours to complete the task, but the cats are now safe with TAW, awaiting foster care at press time. Good thing (for myself and the cats) I actually follow the recommended cleaning schedule! This little tale is only one of many rescues that happens across the Tulsa area every day, and it serves as a reminder of how quickly our rescue community springs into action when animals are in danger or in need. T-Town TNR, TAW, StreetCats Tulsa and many more can only do this work thanks to generous donations, so please consider them in your charitable giving. Now let’s get into this issue—our annual Seniors & Pets edition! We’ve included information on many organizations and businesses that serve seniors and their pets, from senior living communities to food delivery programs. You’ll also find timely, critical information for rabbit owners, so please pass it along to any rabbit-owning friends; it could mean the difference between life and death for pets. And for those returning to some semblance of normal, Heide Brandes’ piece on separation anxiety offers tips to help your pet adjust back into the old routine, which means time alone at home without you. Wherever you fall on the spectrum of old to new normal, we hope reading this issue of TulsaPets can help provide some enjoyment—a bit of the old routine we might have taken for granted before.
