22 OKC Pets • January/February 2021 FINALLY, IT’S A NEW YEAR! One positive from the year 2020 is that at one point the shelters were almost empty because people realized working from home would be the ideal time to get a dog. For those of you who decided to wait, Christmas always delivers. If 2021 brought you a new pup, this is for you. Where do I start? Top 3 items to have when your dog arrives: 1 Crate. Dog crates provide a safe retreat for your dog. If you are bringing home a puppy, a crate is a great tool for potty train- ing. When you are away from the home, you will want to use the crate to confine your dog to prevent destructive behaviors, but never use it for punishment. Make sure the crate is just large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around. Any bigger and your dog will likely eliminate on one side and sleep on the other. As long as your pup isn’t left in the crate for too long, he typically will not potty where he sleeps. As a general rule of thumb, a dog can hold its potty one hour for every month it is old. Do I need a bed for the crate? No, but you could get one if it makes you feel better. Dogs are already wearing coats and don’t need big, fluffy Tempur-Pedic-style mattresses. They are typically so tired when they sleep, they could be comfy on a rock. Also, if he is potty training, the plastic bottom is much easier to clean than the blankets, beds and other items that make you feel better about placing your pup in the crate. Should I cover the crate? Yes, but make sure your dog is tired before doing so; oth- erwise, your pup will pull the cover through the crate out of boredom. This happens with the wire crates, not as much with the plastic, travel crates. 2 Food. It’s best to continue your dog’s regular brand of dog food when he first arrives. If you switch the food “cold turkey,” it could lead to stomach ache and loose stool. The best way to transition your dog to a new food is gradually over a 10- to14-day period. If you have a puppy, make sure you use a puppy formula and feed three meals per day for at least the first 6 months of age. What is the best dog food? The best food is the food that you can afford. Seriously, your pet is your responsibility, but you shouldn’t place your dog’s health over your own chil- dren. Believe me, I’ve met many owners who do. The large companies actually have the big bucks to do the research required to provide safe nutrition. With that said, you get what you pay for most of the time, so take that into consideration. Should I use one of the online fresh food meal programs for my dog? It’s up to you, but if you do, be mindful that most compa- NEW YEAR, NEW PUP A checklist for starting off new puppy ownership responsibly WRITTEN BY: Travis Brorsen, Pet Expert, Trainer and TV Host
