WE DELIVER IN ABOUT AN HOUR! make for fun action photos, but not the best portraits. “Try to take the photos when they’ve had exercise and are a little more settled,” she said. “I love it when pets are sitting and you make a weird noise like ‘boop’ or use their squeaker. It makes them turn their heads and perk up their ears! Candid shots with the dog running to catch a ball or licking someone’s face are also fun. Photographing your pets in their everyday environment and being a part of your family is what makes the shots special.” Another tip for getting a great shot is to meet the animal on its own eye level. That could mean lying on the floor or crouch- ing to get to the same level as your pet. But a shot from that angle can highlight the world from your pet’s eyes and helps to showcase unique likenesses. In the same vein, focusing on your cat’s or dog’s eyes can add dimension and depth. Not only do eyes create captivating photos, but aiming for the eyes is also the best way to snap a good photo if the animal isn’t cooperating. “Don’t wait for the perfect pose with pets. Constant shooting is the way to go. This enables you to capture more interac- tive and special moments from your pet,” said Oklahoma City photographer Katee Hale. Light It Up Professional photographers often say good photos rely on good light. Lighting plays a big role in how well a photo looks, so avoid taking pictures inside where over- head lights can cast shadows. Hale agrees that lighting is the most important part of photography. “Without a clear understanding, your journey into photography will end quickly. The golden hour is a photographer’s Em- erald City because the golden cast from the setting sun will create amazing overlay hues of your subjects,” she said. Morning and late afternoon are often referred to as “magic hours” because of the quality of light. But if you can’t schedule your shots during that time, setting up lights might help. Where you position the light can also make a difference, said White.
