That goes for all photos, actually. When in doubt, put the sun at your subjects’ backs. If they’re looking into the sun, it’ll just blind them,” she said. Have Patience Because pets have their own personalities and can’t be posed as easily as humans, photographers say patience is vital in making a photo shoot enjoyable for everyone. Unlike humans, most pets don’t take directions as easily as we do, so keep your demeanor calm and encouraging. Having plenty of treats on hand to reward good behavior is also helpful, as are belly rubs and head pats for a well-behaved animal. Brashier said favorite toys, special treats, and loving tones in your voice make pets enjoy the photography session as much as the rest of the family. “Relax, take your time, and have fun! Dogs especially respond well to their favorite toys and treats, so having those handy helps keep them cooperating. I make silly noises to attract their attention toward the camera, and sometimes that makes us all laugh,” said Brashier. Both Hale and White recommend having a second pair of hands available to wrangle your pets. “Getting more interactive moments is the key in great pet photography, but having a secondary pair of hands during the photo session is the number-one priority,” said Hale.
