March/April 2021 • OKC Pets 27 6 No mounting or humping. Dr. Carlton, of OKC Vet Campus, states that “although mounting and humping is a perfectly normal behavior in both male and female dogs, it is an excitement and dominant behavior but is not a sexual behavior.” She further states that it is “an instinctive behavior that if left unchecked will bring unnecessary risk to your dog.” These risks are magnified in the dog park when your pup decides to mount another dog; it causes the dog being mounted great anxiety and increases the possibility of a hostile confron- tation between the two dogs, which may gain the attention of other nearby dogs who decide they want to interject themselves. 7 Always pick up your dog’s poop. This is always rule number one. If your dog poops, pick it up. If your dog vomits, pick it up. This is sometimes easier said than done on grass or hard surfaces (I know), but at least make an effort. If your dog pooped and you were not paying attention so you can’t find it, I guarantee you can find another pile nearby to clean up instead. Not only is this being courteous and re- spectful but also helps to prevent the spread of common bacteria and parasites. Midtown Mutts is not a city park that has employees to pick up your dog’s droppings; it’s your responsibility. Dog park trips are a great opportunity for dogs and their parents to bond, socialize and run off pent-up energy, but with all that fun comes responsibility. There is no one instruc- tional pamphlet sketching out the prerequisites for being a dog parent. There is also no singular instruction manual for training your new furry friend. However, guidance from a professional trainer is something I rec- ommend for all new dog owners for a more meaningful relationship and, in turn, more enjoyable visits to the dog park. The Association of Professional Dog Trainers has a list of do’s and don’ts for dog parks to help keep visits enjoyable. Dog park rules and regulations are there to ensure the safety and fun of all its visitors. No matter what type of dog park you go to, knowing and following its rules will help keep you and your dog safe. “... an instinctive behavior that if left unchecked will bring unnecessary risk to your dog.”
