March/April 2021 • OKC Pets 31 Dog-Friendly Destinations Oklahoma has a plethora of dog-friendly spots. Mountains, lakes, rivers, hiking trails and parks await you. A favorite getaway for me is the Parallel Forest in Lawton. This unique forest near the Wichita Mountains was planted by the government to counteract the effects of the Dust Bowl. Trees were planted exactly 6 feet apart so they would grow up and not out. They were made to be a type of blocking wall against wind and erosion. There’s about 16 acres of this premeditated planting, and the product is a gorgeous, uniform family of cedars that is so satisfying to meander through. A short and easy walk through the forest will lead you to a beau- tiful stream and comfy rocks to sit on with your best friend while you soak up the sun. Of course, if you have heard of this destination, then you’ve heard stories of the hauntings and eerie circle of stones that preside there. Yes, there is a stone circle, but all I’ve encountered is a beautiful and calming atmosphere, perfect for a road trip with your dog. This place is great for pictures as well! I’ve included some pictures of a trip when my pup Lucy was young for you to feast your eyes on. Isn’t she adorable? Tips for the Camera-Shy Pup Speaking of pictures, no road trip is complete without them! Some dogs love the camera, and others absolutely hate it. If your dog is not a fan of his or her personal paparazzi, I have a few tips. First off, let him adventure. Give your furry friend time to smell all the smells, see all the sights and get the wiggles out. Once he calms down, have a really good treat or ball in one hand and hold your camera in the other. Once he locks in on the treat or ball, move it close to the camera and snap away! Take a ton of pics in hopes to get one or two great ones. If he responds to your eye contact, make sure your camera is positioned and look straight at him to get him to return your gaze—and snap, snap, snap! When my dog Lucy was young, she would look away deliberately when I whipped out my iPhone, but this little trick made her forget that pesky rectangle and smile cutely at me. No matter where you go, it’s more fun with your fur-family. It’s best to call ahead to parks and stores to make sure they are dog friendly. The road is calling; answer it with a hearty howl from you and your dog! Let us know where you love to travel with your pet in Oklahoma, and we may share it on social media!
