30 OKC Pets • March/April 2022 E ach city has its own ordinances governing specific matters to protect animals from cruelty, neglect, and abuse and to promote the safety and well-being of the citizens. The Office of Animal Welfare is designated to enforce the ordinances of the city. Oklahoma City Ordinance §8-38 specifically prohibits ani- mals from running at large or without a leash. This is commonly referred to as a “leash law.” The ordinance provides that the owner of an animal must have control of the dog or animal if the animal is not on its own property. There are exceptions to this ordinance, which include taking your dog onto private property with the consent of the owner or if you are in a designated dog park. It is important for the safety of your animal and others that your animal remain within the owner’s control, via leash, when outside the animal’s home. This aids in preventing unfortunate events between two animals and between animals and other people. If you violate the leash law, you might be subjected to a fine or the animal might be impounded. A dog or animal might be impounded if the owner is unknown or if the dog hurts a person Oklahoma City Leash Law Is Explained by Jordan Klingler, Partner, McIntyre Law DOCTORS’ HOURS: Monday through Friday 8am-11:30am, 1:30pm-4:30pm Saturday Hours by Appointment Only 2826 West Britton Road, Oklahoma City, OK 73120 (405) 751-8007 www.brittonroadveterinaryclinic.com
