Apple Tree Antique Gallery at 6740 Northwest 39th Expressway in downtown Bethany might be just the place. This store is on Route 66, across from Southern Nazarene University, and draws customers from the Oklahoma City area, Tulsa, Texas, and all over the world. The friendly atmosphere and places to sit and enjoy free coffee and cookies are “perks” that keep people coming back. Leashed pets are also welcome. The store is almost 30 years old and occupies 10,000 square feet in a former one-story TG&Y site in a mid-twentieth century shopping center. Shatzy Watson and Carol Berry bought the Apple Tree eight years ago and rent space to 75 dealers who scour flea markets and garage sales for eye-catching merchandise. A fresh batch of items reaches Apple Tree every day. Many dealers are steady renters, but others are new to the Apple Tree, and the store has a waiting list of other dealers, Watson says. Apple Tree’s central Oklahoma location, near interstate highways and the Kilpatrick Turnpike, is a boon. Visitors enjoy looking for old coins, tur- quoise jewelry, books, glassware, crystal, china, and furniture. The store has many vintage and collectible toys. Route 66 sou- venirs are popular, and so is Bethany High School merchandise. The Apple Tree has a sale on the third full weekend (Friday through Sunday) of every month. An especially festive time for the sale is downtown Bethany’s annual Christmas tree lighting on the third Satur- day of December, featuring carriage rides and entertainment. Apple Tree Antique Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Tuesday and Wednes- day.
