20 OKC Pets • May/June 2021 Closer to Our Homes, Closer to Our Hearts Midwest City’s New Animal Services Center By Kevin Hegerberg F or too long, municipal animal service facili- ties have been located away from the public at the fringe of city limits—out of sight and out of mind. Well, not anymore! Midwest City is designing a new playbook for animal service centers by locating the facility in the heart of the city, accessible to everyone. The existing facility, following the old model, located at the edge of the city, proudly served the community for nearly 30 years. The new 8,500-square-foot facility, with three kennel rooms, two catteries and support offices, is at the corner of E Reno Avenue and Woodside Drive, maximizing its location to provide progressive design aspects both in material and community access. Teresa Coplen, animal welfare manager, will be providing leadership for the new facility. Her mission consists of encouraging responsible pet ownership by promoting the health, safety and welfare of Midwest City’s residents and pets alike through education, enforcement and community partnership. When asked about her vision for the center, Coplen provided her pathway to achieving the facility’s mission: “I feel it is important to build strong relationships with local rescues, volunteers and to offer the best customer service possible. Education is the key to making animal welfare a success.” Nestled on a two-acre lot across the street from Fred Quinn Happy Trails Dog Midwest City Animal Services Center rendering KEY CONTRIBUTIONS • First animal services facility in 30 years. • Strategically located near the municipal dog park and Soldier Creek Trail. • Made use of on-site re- claimed lumber. • A welcoming atmosphere that promotes increased adoptions.
