May/June 2021 • OKC Pets 25 If you’re looking to help your garden doo-doo the best it can doo-doo, turn to your local zoo for help By Heide Brandes Photos courtesy of Oklahoma City Zoo D ropping this spring, Oklahoma City Zoological Park is offering loads of help through its Zoo Poo animal fertilizer prod- uct, and your garden will enjoy the extra number two love that was thoughtfully produced by local animals. The Oklahoma City Zoo’s Zoo Poo Brown Gold premium compost comes straight from the source—the elephants and hoofed animals featured at the zoo. The Brown Gold is made from organic plant material and the poop of many of your favorite OKC Zoo animals, including the Asian elephants, Indian rhinos, giraffes and various hoofstock. Even the zoo’s newest addition Yabi, a female rhino calf, born on Oct. 23 at the OKC Zoo, is contributing to the efforts. In 2019, Lance Swearengin, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s then-horticultural curator, was overwhelmed by the Zoo’s ever-growing mountain of organic plant and animal waste. He discovered that the 15-year-old compost heap was an opportunity that could come up smelling like—well, not quite roses, but close. There was (brown) gold in that giant stinky hill! ZOO POO
