Y ou might have read about a dog named Howie in Nancy Gallimore’s article in last November/December’s issue, titled “When Was the Last Time?” It talked about being unaware of when certain habits in your older dog change and of realizing “they don’t do ‘that’ anymore.” This is Howie featured on our front cover — it’s a drawing by an artist named Phuong Cao. Phuong is incarcerated in the Oklahoma City area, but he somehow got a copy of the issue and was inspired to draw Howie and send the drawing to Nancy. Karen Holman has provided a piece on shock collars and writes about the damages these devices can cause, both physically and behaviorally. There are countless testimonials and studies on the negatives for using shock collars. Every new pet owner needs to read this. Camalotta the Camel was apparently quite the celebrity in Spencer, Oklahoma, known for her personality and her love for Triscuits and Wheat Thins, among other things. She had a good life at Precious Pets Ranch and recently passed away from a sudden heart attack. She’ll be missed by many. If you read my publisher letter from July/August I wanted to let you know that we lost our sweet, beloved Elmer on July 11. He was 14 years, three months, and 11 days old.
