22 OklahomaHorses • January/February 2021 A bove-ground units are the most versatile aquatic treadmills for a variety of work- outs. Notably, they feature adjustable water levels. They allow us to safely work horses of all sizes with few contraindications, making them a favorite piece of equipment for most rehab facilities. Water Levels and Their Functions Filled up (bottom to middle of shoulder) We use this water level for all post-surgery or injured horses. The higher water takes the weight off the horses’ legs and allows them to build range of motion, muscle and lung capacity with- out stressing joints or soft tissue. It’s a high-resis- tance workout with minimal concussion on the legs, meaning less force is sent vertically up the leg when the hoof strikes the ground.
