18 OklahomaHorses • January/February 2022 termining how to best manage those herds has become a real issue. Enter the Mustang Heritage Foundation, an organization that helps to find forever homes for thousands of wild horses and burros each year. The foundation is dedicated to removing the animals from Bureau of Land Manage- ment holding pens and placing them in homes and private care through innovative programs, events, and education. One such event is the Extreme Mustang Makeover, in which Davis’ competition has become well known. She has participated in about a dozen Extreme Mustang Makeover compe- titions, capturing three championship titles and many top finalist positions. Davis has long had an affinity for mus- tangs because, as she puts it, “they’ve never been lied to” and therefore are more willing to trust once they bond with their handlers. Davis has worked with dozens of mustangs during the years but fondly remembers a horse named Filthy Rich from her second Mustang Makeover competition in Texas. Davis admits that Filthy Rich was a chal- lenge, but she also considers him the horse that inspired her to rethink how she works with mustangs and horses in general. “Mustangs are hardy, and they under- stand where their safety is,” said Davis. “They also don’t like to be fenced in, which I can relate to.” Because of Davis’ incredible success in working with mustangs, she has been featured in documentary films such as Wild Horse, Wild Ride and the three-part series Mustang Millionaire on the National Geographic Channel.
