OklahomaHorses Magazine May 2022

4 OklahomaHorses • May/June 2022 L ate spring can still surprise us with chilly weather, but isn’t it good to see longer days, green grass, and blooming plants again? This May-June issue of Oklahoma Horses has plenty of reading material for you to enjoy as we all slide toward summer. I hope you have enjoyed Dr. Jason Harris’ fascinating three- part series about historic cattle trails in Oklahoma. In this final article, Harris explores the transition from the era of cattle drives to Oklahoma’s modern ranch industry in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Lindsay Humphrey’s two-part series on the benefits of cross- training ends in this issue with a discussion of physical training that will be interesting for anyone and especially helpful for riders. Many riders are starting to realize that working on those curls and planks can improve the ability to coordinate with the natural movement of a horse. This issue features horse people in a range of ages from kiddo to senior. You can read about summer riding camps for youngsters in Oklahoma (who knew there are so many choices?), the International Finals Youth Rodeo set for Shawnee on July 10–15, and interesting obstacle courses for horses and and riders. And don’t miss Carol Mowdy Bond’s article about Stanley Burris, a very active 92-year-old farmer and horseman. He has competed in equine competitions since age 15 — and still is — and he supports therapeutic riding programs for children and adults. Attorney Adam Trenk gives readers some useful advice about equine liability in different states. So join us as we follow various paths into summer in the wonderful world of horses.
