Expanding the Business Something else Trenk was interested in doing was expanding the Billy Cook business, and he wasted no time in making that change. The company added branded apparel to its line of products and more recently, leather products such as belts, wallets, and handbags. Trenk’s mother had worked for Gucci, known for its high-end handbags, and Trenk tapped into her knowledge and experience to help him design a line of Genuine Billy Cook handbags called Billy Bags. Trenk also added a shop for custom saddle orders. They can be ordered directly from the website, https:// genuinebillycook.com, and the turnaround time is approximately 12 to 16 weeks. Perhaps most important, in 2021, Trenk legally shut down improper use of the Billy Cook name. “Genuine Billy Cook is once again the only Billy Cook,” stated Trenk, who is very proud of the brand he has helped to reestablish. “Our saddles are made in America, and we try to source most of our materials stateside as well.” Twenty-six people are employed at the Genuine Billy Cook shop in Sulphur. Trenk kept on all the former staff when he bought the business. “The people who make our saddles are truly artisans,” said Trenk. “They are capable of incredible things, and without them, we would not have a business.” Every Genuine Billy Cook Saddle is hand- tooled by artisans to ensure that the exquisite detail is lasting.
