If anyone likes history and horses, we’d love to have them come and join.” Plenty of posse members don’t have horses, but there’s still a role for them to play in every event the posse participates in. In addition to the work with schools, veterans, and special-needs facilities, the U.S. Marshals Posse raises funds for schol- arships in law enforcement. With a foot in just about every door possible, the future is bright for the U.S. Marshals Posse in the Western District of Oklahoma. Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal “The U.S. marshal represents a lot of things, but especially equality and respect, which were the foundation of the American dream. The first female deputy U.S. marshal was sworn in back in the 1880s. They also had people of different ethnic backgrounds serving as U.S. marshals and deputies. But there’s one deputy marshal who is special to the U. S Marshals Posse of the Western District of Oklahoma because he lived in Muskogee — Bass Reeves. He was a slave who escaped in the 1860s and then became a deputy U.S. marshal in 1875. He was a great American patriot who stood up and made things happen with very few resources. He couldn’t read or write, so Judge Isaac Parker read every warrant to him. A lot of times when outlaws heard that Bass Reeves was coming after them, they just gave themselves up right away. He was an amazing lawman, but he isn’t taught in Oklahoma history in very many schools in the state.” — Catherine Carter If you have attended a parade in Oklahoma, you have very likely seen the U.S. Marshals Posse at work.
