Shopping with Mr. Giggles in Mind Shopping with a pet in mind isn’t a new trend. A survey in 2018 showed that a full 73 percent of millennials owned a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association. Of the millennials who bought a home, 89 percent owned a pet, according to Realtor.com. For this demographic, 79 percent of pet-owning homebuyers who closed on a property this year said they would pass up an otherwise perfect home if it didn’t meet the needs of their pets, according to the Re- altor.com survey. Another reason so many homes are being built or customized with pets in mind is the availability—or lack thereof—of pet-friendly rental property. According to information reported in a landlords’ survey conducted by FIREPAW, Inc., approximately half of the housing market is pet friendly, but only 9 percent of housing allows companion animals without any significant limitations on size or type. Half of rental housing allows cats, but only 11 percent allows large dogs. The survey also found that 82 percent of pet owners reported having trouble finding a rental unit that would take their pet, and the average pet deposit was 40 percent to 85 percent of the rent. Some of the more unique modifications homeowners have installed with their pets in mind are no-slip and heated floors. The heated floors are especially good for animals with arthritis, and carpet runners or no-slip flooring helps animals from scuttling and slipping when they run through the house. Dog-wash stations are more and more popular, as are anxiety-reducing window treatments such as plantation shutters that close fairly tightly. “One thing I’ve seen on Pinterest is a modification to a kitchen island that has a little door that slides out with the food bowls,” said Hedrick. “We are definitely seeing more and more modifications that make life easier for pets.”
