OklahomaHorses Magazine Sept 2022
4 OklahomaHorses • September / October 2022 W hen fall temperatures drop and a hot mug of coffee in front of the fire seems inviting, it’s a good time to curl up with a magazine for some entertaining reading. We hope you enjoy this issue of Oklahoma Horses , with a wide range of equine topics — young people, seniors, and everyone in between. We are proud to feature the Pendletons, who have been farming near Yukon since 1881 and are intertwined with the history of the state. Two articles prove that there are many ways to stay involved with equines throughout the years and even leave a legacy for the future. You will enjoy reading about Elizabeth Logan’s planned donation to OSU and the various activities of other senior horsewomen. The Heart of Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association helps to pass the state’s rich equine heritage on to young people through its competitions and its emphasis on humanity and horsemanship. You will be pleased to learn that the Modoc Nation in northeastern Oklahoma operates Horses of Hope, a therapy program to aid tribal and nontribal children and adults who have suffered abuse. Lindsay Humphrey highlights the Pony of the Americas breed, which is very popular in Oklahoma and has drawn many breeders to the Edmond area during the years. If you enjoy a laugh, don’t miss the article about John Harrison, a rodeo clown and trick rider from Soper. Oklahoma Horses pays tribute to Baxter Black, a famous and prolific cowboy author, who died in June 2022. You will enjoy reading about his colorful life. If you have kept up with horsey news, you might have heard that the American quarter horse was named Oklahoma’s official horse breed in August. Read our article to find out how this came about and to learn how popular and numerous quarter horses are in the state.
