In this issue of Oklahoma Horses, we remember the famous horsey television star Mister Ed. And don’t miss Carol Mowdy Bond’s article about a new little four-legged Oklahoman, Pumpkin, who might be the smallest horse in the world. Read about the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show, which will draw many visitors to Oklahoma City on October 7–14. The annual event showcases the versatile Morgan breed in all sorts of competitions. Horses have a longstanding connection with the American Indian tribes in Oklahoma. Casie Bazay traces a lineage of horses that moved to the area with the Chickasaws in the 1830s. Chickasaw horses were among the ancestors of the modern quarter horse. Rescue work among equines is a focus in the state, and Nexus Equine provides a unique opportunity for young people to learn about horses at a camp. The Police Athletic League of the Oklahoma City Police Department teams up with Nexus for this two-day event. Real live horses abound in Oklahoma, but some man-made steeds are on the scene too. Andrea Chancellor gives us a look at eye-catching sculptures that pop up in different places and for different purposes, reminding us that horses are a vibrant part of our culture.
