He was 12 years old. He is survived by his loving mom; his human brother, Stephen Calvillo, 23; and his human sister, Ellie Cover, 14. He wasn’t my first dog, but Frank was the only one to be with me for his whole long life. For nearly 11 years, he was an energetic source of love and light for our family. I struggle now to express how much he was loved, how ridiculously full of sunshine his smile was. First of all, Frank was effortlessly cool. He will always be cooler than I am. Like most people who are cooler than you, I heard about Frank before I met him. I was working at the Urban Tulsa Weekly as a reporter when I opened an e-mail about a French Bulldog that needed re- homing. Our ad salesperson bred French- ies, and she had a year-old black brindle named Frank, barely out of babyhood. He had been handed back after a young couple decided they couldn’t handle both a newborn and a wild Frenchie simultane- ously. The e-mail was sent to all staffers, and despite feeling this was meant to be after I had dreamed of a Frenchie for years, I wasn’t the first to reply. Our creative direc- tor at the time got to Frank first. Although thwarted, I remained determined to spend time with this cool dog. I started to take care of Frank when my coworker went out of town. Lucky for me, Frank was buck wild and chock-full of energy. He didn’t jive with my coworker’s older animals, who were not at all impressed with this rambunctious gargoyle’s constant bids to play. One day after a few months, my cowork- er said, “Why don’t you just take him?” Frank basks in the sun in November 2020, wearing one of his typical facial expressions.
