This can cause water intoxication. Symptoms include lack of coordination, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, bloating and more. This can be an emergency situation. Dogs also get something called dead tail syndrome, or limber tail syndrome. This happens usually to large breed dogs after spending too much time playing in the water or overusing their tail. Overexertion causes muscle strain, and they can’t wag their tail or hold it up. This can be a painful condition and needs to be addressed by your veterinarian. Be especially watchful of dogs and chil- dren swimming together. Teach children not to tease the dogs—no feigning drowning! The dogs sometimes think their people need rescuing because they don’t understand our recreational swimming. Have fun in the water with your dogs!
