In fact, it is a Natural Wildlife Habitat accredited by the National Wildlife Federation. Deer stop by just outside the tall fence, and possums, raccoons, foxes, squirrels, and turtles are right at home. Some of the turtles visit the courtyard and are recogniz- able, and Saint Simeon’s holds a turtle race every spring. Saint Simeon’s, at 3701 North Martin Luther King Jr. Boule- vard, is a continuous-care retire- ment center. It has four levels of assisted living, a memory center, a medical resort for short-term skilled nursing and rehabilita- tion, and long-term care. Peacocks roam the grounds, and Saint Simeon’s has at least one aviary in every building. Residents also enjoy watching fish in large tanks. A staff member looks after a bearded dragon and other lizards. No pets live with the resi- dents of Saint Simeon’s, says marketing coordinator Kelli James, but leashed dogs can visit. Other types of visiting animals are considered on a case-by-case basis. Being around animals can make such a positive difference for a person, James says. It can result in increased physi- cal activity, improved mental health and cognitive function, and more opportunity for social interaction. Even looking through a window into a gar- den or woods can be beneficial. For more information, call (918) 425-3583 or visit https://saintsimeons.org . F or those who seek assisted living for people and pets together, the Grove at Mid- town offers just that. Three dogs and one cat currently reside there in assisted living with their humans. People can have dogs, cats, birds, or hamsters in their apartments, usually one or two per client. Staff members at the Grove can assist residents with their animals if needed, administer- ing medications and helping in other ways, thus allowing people to keep their beloved pets with them. The Grove at Midtown is an assisted living and memory facility at 5211 South Lewis Av- enue, with 103 apartments, 57 of which are for assisted living. It has a screened patio, outside courtyard, vegetable and flower garden, and a long paved walking trail. Two “community birds” live in the common area. The memory unit currently has no animals, but requests would be considered on an individual basis. Visitors can bring leashed pets into assisted living with some guidelines, says Tiffany Citizen, community relations director. The Grove provides water for general animal visitors, but not all residents choose to have visits from animals. Pet visits to specific residents are allowed. Trained and certified therapy dogs with a certain number of service hours can visit, Citizen says.
