28 TulsaPets • May / June 2023 A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO GOOD - BYE How Howie Passed the Torch Story and photos by Nancy Gallimore J im, my partner in life and dog obsession, handed me his phone the moment I walked in the door from work. “Look,” he said with a smile, “I had a helper today.” The phone screen revealed a series of dog photos, up close and personal — a snout I immediately recognized as belonging to our young dog, Tag. Now, these photos would have had zero meaning for anyone else beyond being funny doggy snoot shots. But I was immediately transported back nearly 16 years earlier. I had walked into the kitchen to find Jim lying on the floor, half inside the cabinet un- Howie (left) eventually accepts Tag as a good companion and protégé.
