38 TulsaPets • May / June 2023 Companies with Cruelty-Free Products Not sure where to start? Here are some lines of beauty care that are verified to be cruelty free by using one of the two methods above. Because the manufacture and use of cruelty-free products are a growing trend among companies and consumers, the products range from low-dollar items you will find in a drugstore all the way up to luxury brands. • NYX: NYX is a drugstore staple that has committed to kindness to animals by being both cruelty free and vegan in its products. Because of the vision of company found- er Toni Ko, the brand offers quality and affordability in its products, and People for the Ethical Treatment of An- imals (PETA) has referenced the company’s dedication to using zero animal-derived ingredients. • CoverGirl: A beauty staple since 1961, CoverGirl prod- ucts became entirely cruelty free in 2018. The company has earned the Leaping Bun- ny seal of approval, meaning it has undergone extensive audits to verify its cruelty-free status. It is one of the largest beauty brands to have earned a Leaping Bunny seal. • E.L.F.: E.L.F. is an afford- able brand with diverse options for any skin type. On top of that, it is both cruelty free and vegan, hav- ing replaced animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax with cleaner sources. E.L.F. has even kicked to the curb ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, and nonylphenol. • Milani: Milani proves that quality products can come at a reasonable price. The brand can be found in any drugstore and is best known for its Rose Powder blush and two-in-one foundation and concealer. The brand doesn’t test on ani- mals or outsource to labs that do, and it has some vegan products for customers who want to do even better for our furry four-legged friends. • Lush: Lush has been opposed to animal testing for more than 30 years, even going so far as to claim that it has the strictest policy against animal testing in the cosmetics industry. Lush maintained this policy when it started as a mail-order beauty company and did not deviate when the products expanded into large stores. Products range from makeup to shower steamers and fall into the moderate price category. • Glossier: Glossier is a mod- erately priced brand that has earned the coveted Leaping Bunny status for its products. The brand focuses on simplici- ty with its makeup, with basic ingredients and colors meant to enhance one’s natural beauty. Its simple but elegant packaging conveys its values beautifully, and better yet, you can purchase the product knowing that no animals were harmed in its production. • Urban Decay: With prod- ucts that are moderately to high priced, Urban Decay prides itself on its bold and long-lasting colors. The brand has been cruelty free since its founding in 1996 and has a variety of vegan formulas also. “Be Fearless” is the company’s motto, and its products cer- tainly live up to that. Urban Decay is a gold mine for lovers of the unconventional who want to make socially conscious purchases. • Hourglass: When seeking a cosmetics company that cares deeply about animal rights, one can look no farther than the luxury brand Hourglass Cosmetics. Hourglass is not only completely cruelty free, but 100 percent of its products are vegan. One percent of the proceeds goes to the Nonhu- man Rights Projects, a United States organization dedicated to animal rights. The over- arching company, Unilever, does still sell to countries that require animal testing but plans to be completely cruelty free by the end of 2023. • Herbivore: Herbivore Botanicals is a luxurious skin- care line that incorporates environmental awareness into every aspect of its brand. Products are free from syn- thetic ingredients, chemicals, parabens, fragrances, and dyes, and the company is almost entirely plastic free in its packaging, using only re- cycled plastic when absolutely necessary. Herbivore is also entirely cruelty free. NYX has cosmetics in just about any color to suit one’s needs. The company proves that a brand can be diverse, affordable, and cruelty free all at the same time. Urban Decay sports colorful packaging meant to attract peo- ple who consider themselves unique and bold — just like the brand. The products are also cruelty free to boot.
