WWW.UPDOGYOGATULSA.COM FIRST CLASS $ 5 Oklahoma K9 PT: Canine Rehabilitation and Wellness I s your beloved canine companion getting stiff in the joints or recovering from an injury or disability? Just like humans, dogs can develop osteoarthritis, diabetes, kidney failure, and other conditions. But there are ways you can help them live longer, health- ier lives and avoid unnecessary pain. Oklahoma K9 PT specializes in canine rehabilitation and wellness by providing education for pet parents and therapy for pooches. Courtney White, with her background as a doctor of physical therapy and a certified canine myomanipulative functional ther- apist, says, “I focus on dogs who might be struggling to maintain muscle and thrive in their senior years.” Canine rehabilitation treats conditions of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that affect aging dogs, most commonly osteoarthritis. Other such conditions are intervertebral disc disease, degenerative myelopathy (similar to ALS in humans), and memory loss. Canine myomanipulative functional therapy is a form of massage therapy that aims to restore proper function to the body by making changes to the muscles and ad- dressing dysfunctions in the ability to move optimally. With massage, your dog can feel immediate effects of relief from pain, with increased circulation and lymphatic flow to assist in waste removal from tissues. Once pain has subsided, healing can begin. Other types of therapy are exercise, heat/ cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimula- tion, laser therapy, and aquatherapy. In addition to therapy for dogs and education courses and resources for their human parents, White has created the Senior Dog Workbook to help people recognize early signs of aging in dogs and make informed end-of-life decisions for their canine companions. White says, “In this workbook, you will find a wellness questionnaire, two mobility measurement tools, a dog pain scale, and quality-of-life assessment tools.” For more information about Oklahoma K9 PT, go to http://www.oklahomak9pt. com/ or https://www.facebook.com/ OklahomaK9PT or call Courtney White, DPT, (918) 609-2018.
