September / October 2022 • TulsaPets 31 Prairie House Assisted Living and Memory Care P rairie House Assisted Living and Memory Care is a beautiful upscale community in collaboration with Ascension St. John Broken Arrow. A highlight that sets it apart from other communities is that it has a nurse on-site 24 hours a day (a nurse for ev- ery shift). Having a nurse on-site alleviates unnecessary trips to the emergency room, provides in-house diabetic oversight and care, and allows Prairie House to serve res- idents in real time with real nursing care. It is a true “age-in-place” community because it has 24-hour nursing on-site. Prairie House has many services and amenities for the enjoyment of residents and their families. It features all services and programs to maintain and enhance residents’ lives, including around-the- clock nursing and pendant (assisted living) concierge-style living, not just for medical use. The exact cost is presented at assess- ment, no à la carte charges, no surprises. A wide range of medical services is available, including podiatry clinic, physician visits, and therapies; exercise, wellness, and health programs; medication management; and assistance with dressing, bathing, and meals. Prairie House has an on-site library, arts and crafts studio, hair and nail salon, movie theater, and doggie park. It handles management of sliding-scale diabetics, not dependent on outside providers; schedules engaging activities daily; plans outings and special events; and schedules transportation for appointments and outings. Saint Simeon’s Senior Community S aint Simeon’s Senior Community in northwest Tulsa is not only pet friendly but also wildlife friendly. In fact, it is a Natural Wildlife Habitat accredited by the National Wildlife Federation. Deer stop by just outside the tall fence, and possums, raccoons, foxes, squirrels, and turtles are right at home. Some of the turtles visit the courtyard and are recognizable, and Saint Simeon’s holds a turtle race every spring. Saint Simeon’s, at 3701 North Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is a continu- ous-care retirement center. It has four levels of assisted living, assisted-living memory care, a memory center, a medical resort for short-term skilled nursing and rehabilita- tion, and long-term care. Peacocks roam the grounds, and Saint Simeon’s has at least one aviary in every building. Residents also enjoy watching fish in large tanks. A staff member looks after a bearded dragon and other lizards. No pets live with the residents of Saint Simeon’s, says marketing coordinator Kelli James, but leashed dogs can visit. Other types of visiting animals are considered on a case-by-case basis. Being around animals can make such a positive difference for a person, James says. It can result in increased physical activity, improved mental health and cognitive func- tion, and more opportunity for social in- teraction. Even looking through a window into a garden or woods can be beneficial. Saint Simeon’s is a mission of the Episco- pal Diocese of Oklahoma.
