OklahomaHorses Magazine January 2022

4 OklahomaHorses • January/February 2022 I hope the new year of 2022 is off to a good start for you and your horses and other animals — dogs, cats, or whatever! I’m sure we all look forward to many enjoyable times as the winter progresses and we start to navigate our way through the unusual challenges of the past two years. As you settle down for some reading time with this issue of the magazine, don’t miss Dr. Jason Harris’ article about historic cattle trails in Oklahoma. This first article in a three-part series traces the beginnings of the cattle trails after the Civil War and the development of the American cowboy, which has left such a legacy in film and television. This issue features three colorful and versatile people in the horse world — Glenn Jackson, “Extreme Wylene” Davis, and Carolyn Simancik. Jackson is a prizewinning calf roper and a stunt double who works on the television show Yellowstone . Davis is a trainer and clinician who specializes in wild mustangs and domestic “problem” horses. Carolyn Simancik has worked in the breeding aspect of the horse business and has started a new career as a photographer focusing on events at horse arenas and racetracks. Spring is not far off, and Lindsay Humphrey’s helpful article on checkups and medications will get you on the right track with your equine partners. If you have had trouble loading your horse into a trailer, be sure to read the practical tips from Dr. Kris Hiney. The equine production program at Mid-America Technology Center in Wayne offers high school students and adults a chance to learn all aspects of the horse business. Mary Westman has excellent legal advice about what to do if clients stop paying you for training and keeping their horses. So kick off your shoes, crunch some popcorn, sip some cider, and enjoy our magazine! Happy New Year, Marilyn and Elmer P.S. Why a Common Bonds ad? Common Bonds is a statewide initiative to increase awareness of our pet overpopulation problem and help end needless pet euthanasia. We know that everyone who owns a horse probably has a dog or two, so we’re trying to spread the word.
