Sessions are offered weekdays, week- nights, and weekends. The first step is an in-home behavioral consultation so Cowan can meet the dog, answer and ask questions, and formulate the best training strategy with the owner. “We believe that dog training is not some- thing you do to your dog, it’s something you do with your dog. It’s all about building that mutual trust and creating that human-dog bond. If we can create that, the dog listens better, and the dog will focus on you better. You’re going to have a lot more success if your dog is paying attention to you,” says Cowan. A typical plan might include five sessions within six months, Cowan says. “At that point, we should have the behaviors manage- able.” However, the services of Big Friendly Dog Training are based on a commitment for the lifetime of the dog. This “train- er-on-retainer program,” Cowan says, is de- signed to accommodate whatever behavioral challenges might occur even when owners are maintaining basic obedience and trying to keep up the training. Cowan has more than 10 years of expe- rience working with animals and has been training dogs exclusively for the last four years with Big Friendly Dog Training.
